UPPA Baby Vista Stroller Review
4/5 Star Ratings, Really sweet stroller! but very big!, April 2, 2010
I received my UPPABaby Vista Stroller in the Maya design. Its very nice! Let me preface this by saying that this is my third baby. I bought the typical huge travel system with my first son, along with a ‘snap and go’ for days when I just needed to run somewhere quickly. With my second son, I did away with the travel system and just used the snap and go, and bought a new Maclaren for when he was no longer a newborn. Thats all you really need, to be perfectly and completely honest. A snap and go for the baby carseat, and by the time the baby can sit up they are ready for a reclining umbrella stroller.
That being said, I am very practical. With my first baby, I brought the entire house with me when I went somewhere. So I needed room for a diaper bag, toys, gear, etcetc. When my second son was born, I fit a few diapers in my handbag along with a few wipes and that was all I really needed. He played with my empty Starbucks cup or some similar object that we didn’t need to bring from home. And we always brought a change of clothes that we left in the car for emergencies. But that was it. you live and you learn which items are true necessities and which just take up unnecessary space.
So, its been awhile. About 6 years. And we decided to start fresh again with the baby gear when we found out we were expecting baby number 3. (A GIRL!)
I checked out the Bugaboo, the Micralite and the Uppababy. I also saw a Stokke and thought it was absolutely the ugliest thing ever. The seat looked like it was cranked up on a pole. CRANK being the operative word. And the umbrella as a shade/canopy looks a bit strange. Thats just my opinion, but before you go buying a Stokke make sure you look at it first, on BOTH sides! The pictures will not show you the ugly side of the stroller. Anyway, the Uppababy far surpassed any other stroller in every category and I have researched ALOT of strollers in the past few months. I liked the forward or rear facing, fully reclining or upright interchangeable seat, bassinet (which I will probably never use), and the fact that it is compatible with 3 different brands of infant carseats. This stroller was VERY well thought out and designed. It makes a huge difference when you can actually take the seat off the frame to attach the carseat on it. With other less expensive travel systems, you place the carseat on top of the existing seat, which already has a canopy on it, combined with the carseat canopy… it makes for a HUGE monstrosity to be pushing around. They remind me of the sweet homeless gentleman that used to live outside of our apartment building in our old city apartment. He pushed around a shopping cart overloaded with blankets and clothes. Thats sort of how I feel about those travel systems. And trust me, I am not hating on them, I used to push one around myself!
Anyway, in all of the above mentioned respects, the Uppababy is AWESOME! The only downside for me, and this is nitpicking, is the size. I am not used to such a big stroller. I am short, about 5’2″ and it seems to be quite long. I can’t see the ground in front of me when the seat is turned around facing me, which is normal with larger strollers, but even more so with the UPPABaby Vista Stroller. The frame is very long. I probably wasn’t thinking because this may be our last baby, and the reason for the large frame is to fit the rumble seat on the back. It is PERFECT for that. The basket is huge. The handlebars are telescopic and perfect for tall people that need a longer handle. it steers like a dream. For a first baby, this is a 5 star, without a doubt, amazing stroller. For your third and probably last baby, maybe you could get away with something a little smaller.
Before this arrived at my house, I saw it in person at a store, sitting right next to a Bugaboo. The Bugaboo looked adorable and much more my style. It seemed more compact. But my constant reminder of the negative reviews made me turn a blind eye to it. The Uppababy looks HUGE in comparison. Another high end, but more compact stroller is the Micralite. I hated the small basket, hated the bumper bar which is very oddly placed, but as far as being COMPACT with the same features (reclining/removable seat, carseat compatibility) the Micralite was pretty nice. I thought the Bugaboo has much more variety when choosing colors, and I was set on getting one of those hot pink seats or something else feminine. Then I thought about my poor husband and how he would be mortified to be pushing around a hot pink stroller. Ladies, think of this when you are looking at the cutesy pink things. Trust me, i was all for not getting anything sporty this time. Been there, done that. The Maya fabric color is very very nice. Yellow but not too feminine. Sporty. A definitely alternative to the bright reds and silvers they have going on. Also, the fabric of the Uppababy is NOT soft cotton, it is more of a soft shiny canvas. Just a warning because I was very surprised to see this when it arrived. It is still very nice.
Oh, and here is another downside to the Uppababy’s size. I know you have read that you can pull it right up to a table in a restaurant because the seat height is higher than the traditional stroller seat. All of that is true, but I am being perfectly frank here. The back wheels of this stroller are way too wide to be convenient enough to push into a typical restaurant. You’ll still be able to maneuver it around tables, but with three kids, the kind of restaurants we bring our children to are mostly booth-style, or have tables that are very closely situated. I can’t imagine any restaurant allowing you to bring that in. However if you are at an outdoor cafe, it probably would not be an issue whatsoever. I am just giving my opinion here. And totally nitpicking because this stroller is fantastic.
I will save a 5 star rating for a stroller that has all of the same features as the uppababy but on maybe a bit of a more compact frame. I do not believe that has been invented yet.
